1996-97 Fleer Rookie Sensations Kobe Bryant

January 22, 2009

Kobe Bryant is one of the most popular players in the NBA today due to his on-court prowess and charismatic appeal. He was also named as the Most Valuable Player last season while playing for the Los Angeles Lakers.

In the sports trading cards hobby, his cards are one of the most-sought after by collectors and usually command top dollar especially his autographed cards and rookie cards.

Case in point? I sold this card yesterday to an Australian collector in an online trading forum for $38 (P1,862) in PayPal funds. That’s the highest I’ve been paid for a non-autographed Kobe Bryant card. Being a rookie year card, this is one of Kobe’s first cards and is hard to find. This is from the 1996-97 Fleer Rookie Sensations set. Apparently, the collector is trying to complete the set and this is the only card missing so he immediately grabbed my offer.

In retrospect, this card netted me the highest price I’ve ever been paid for. It’s a 2003-04 Upper Deck R-Class R-Tifacts Signature Kobe Bryant. It features a piece of Kobe’s warm-up with a sticker autograph. It is serial numbered to only 50 copies. A collector from Manila paid me P6,000 for it last 2006.

Not bad for a piece of cardboard huh?
