Manny Pacquiao vs Ricky Hatton Bout Already Set

January 24, 2009

In a report by Dyan Castillejo last night at ABS-CBN’s TV Patrol, Manny Pacquiao confirmed,

The fight is on!

It was also the same exact words uttered by promoter Bob Arum after Manny signed the contract last night for his May 2 bout with Ricky Hatton. That officially ended weeks of negotiations between the two camps.

Originally, Manny’s camp wanted a 60-40 split of the revenue of the bout but Ricky’s camp wanted a 50-50 split. That figure was lowered to 55-45 but Ricky’s camp is really adamant on their decision saying that the “Hitman” draws the larger crowd and PPV sales will be higher in the UK than in the poor Philippines. This was evident when a large throng of British supporters came to Las Vegas when Hatton fought Floyd Mayweather last December 2007. Well, Ricky Hatton can surely generate a mass of “paying” supporters but as the more popular fighter and boxing’s pound-for-pound king, proper due should be given to Manny Pacquiao. He only got 35% share of the revenue in his bout with Oscar dela Hoya last December 6. This time around, he should be given the larger share of the pie.

In Manny’s words:

I want to fight Ricky Hatton if the terms are right and fair. Modesty aside, I did not become the best pound-for-pound fighter by fighting patsies on my way to the top.

Bob Arum gave a final offer sheet of 52-48 in Manny’s favor with a $12 million guaranteed purse. In true barbershop story fashion, “Pacman” only agreed to sign the contract after Rex “Wakee” Salud met Manny’s dare to down three bottles of beer. Salud is Pacquiao’s long-time friend and adviser. He is not a drinker and only accepted the offer because he doesn’t want the bout to be called-off.

I think we should all be thankful to Wakee Salud then.

The bout is scheduled on May 2 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas. Yes, it is the same venue where Pacquiao beat dela Hoya last December. They will meet at the 140 pounds junior-welterweight limit.

The “Pacman” versus the “Hitman”.

Now that’s a nice tag line.

can manny add hatton to his list of victims? i think so, although this fight is definitely a good match up just like the fight against marquez.

@lemuel - let’s just hope so.. If manny’s winning streak continues, it’s a great pride for us Filipinos..

Ayaw ko nang naglalaban si Manny Pacquiao. Baka kasi matalo na naman sya.

Hahaha! Ganu’n ako, takot tumanggap ng failure at defeat. =,(

@sheng - sympre. Di naman siya magiging champion kung pipitsugin lang eh. Pero I’m sure, kaya siya ni idol.

@RJ - bro, matagal ng di natatalo si Manny. Tsaka di ka magiging succesful kung di ka makakaranas ng failures. Tha’s the way it is.

I just didn’t like how they made a big fuss out of Pacquiao’s camp’s rejection of the previous proposal regarding the sharing of the proceeds. It made Manny look greedy. BUt, of course, Manny has all the right to demand, given his status now.

Best of luck to him in his upcoming fight.
