Pacquiao TKOs dela Hoya in Eight Round!
December 7, 2008After the end of round 8, trainer Nacho Beristain told referee Tony Weeks that Oscar dela Hoya is done fighting for the night. Dela Hoya calmly stood up from his stool and met Manny Pacquiao at the center of the ring to congratulate the victor.
You’re still my idol, Pacquiao told him.
No, you’re my idol, De La Hoya said.
It was a “Dream Mismatch” indeed! But it went the other way unlike most boxing “experts” had predicted. Even Las Vegas bookers gave Pacman no chance as he was a 2 - 1 underdog coming into the fight. But in a wonderful performance, he pummeled dela Hoya into the ropes with his lightning-quick and precision hand speed. He also circled and danced his way around dela Hoya to avoid his vaunted left hook. In the end, Pacman was too much for the Golden Boy to handle. Sorry Manny, I also underestimated you. I know you will win but I never thought it would be by TKO.
Here’s round 7 of the bout where Manny completely dominated Oscar. His performance should now left no one questioning his “Number One Pound-for-Pound Boxer in the World” status.
Oscar has never had a beating like this in any of his 44 previous fights. His face was swollen and left eye nearly closed after that defining round.
Here’s the post-fight interview for both fighters. Mabuti at hindi nagnosebleed si Manny, hehe..
After the bout, dela Hoya approached trainer Freddie Roach and told him:
Freddie, you’re right, I just don’t have it anymore.
