The Boston Celtics Championship Ring

NBA players surely are a pampered breed. They get million-dollar contracts, are very popular and living the high life. And when they do bag the ultimate goal which is to win a championship, they are given a bling-bling which makes us drool.

The Boston Celtics opened the 2008-09 NBA Season with a pregame ceremony to receive their championship rings from NBA Commissioner David Stern prior to their first game of the season against King James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. If you’re hiding in a cave the past few months (or simply don’t care), they earned their blings by defeating Kobe Bryant and the LA Lakers in the last NBA Finals. And what a bling it is!

These were given to each of the Boston Celtics players and other important team figures. Each ring is made of 14-karat white gold and has a total of 84 diamonds. The top of the ring features a shamrock with heart-shaped emeralds for its leaves and three custom-cut baguette emeralds on the stem.    

The ring features “BANNER 17″ on one side, to commemorate the Celtics 17th NBA Championship. The word “UBUNTU” is also prominently featured. It’s from the Zulu word loosely translated as “humanity”, describing the ubuntu philosophy: “A person is a person only through other people”. This was the team’s mantra during the 2007-08 season.

On the other side is the player’s name and number as well as the image of the Larry O’Brien Trophy set with a 0.10ct diamond.

Each ring is worth $30,000 by the way. Now, who’s not drooling?
