Bird Watching at Malagos Garden Resort
August 31, 2008Just less than a month after our Samal Island trip, we were back again at Davao City. This time, due to an invitation from Wendy’s ninang to visit Malagos Garden Resort to celebrate her birthday.
Since August 10 was a Sunday, we went to church first at Elenita Heights, Mintal where Ninang Yvette lives. Then off we go to Malagos Garden Resort where we arrived at around 10:00 AM. Since we already are starving as we have not taken any breakfast, we ate first at the parking area where there are picnic tables. Food is not allowed by the way inside the resort.
Ito’ng mga sugpo ang binanatan ko!
Resort admission is P100 for adults and P80 for children. Unluckily for us, when we entered the resort at 11:00 AM, the bird show has just been finished. Oh well, sucks big time! Fortunately, we were still able to catch this friendly parrot.
A guide introduced himself to us and led us to a tour of the whole place. The place is a haven for many varieties of birds. Some of them are exotic and already rare. These are some of the birds (I forgot to take note of their names).
When I blurted out “matang lawin” when I saw this bird, the tour guide immediately told us that Kuya Kim Atienza will go to the place the week after that day to shoot an episode of his show “Matang Lawin”.
The place has also I think around 100 ostriches. I’ve never seen this many ostriches in my entire life!
Look how big the ostrich’s egg is! This was taken at their Koi Café, so called because of the hundreds of koi fish in the man-made pools surrounding the restaurant. They serve ostrich meat but we did not try it.
They also have a spot called Noah’s Arc Topiary, a collection of animal sculptures made from shrubs. Very cool eh? Wrong spelling nga lang ung arc, hehe..
At our background is Noah’s Ark.
At the playground.
Gorilla on the loose!
At the gazebo where garden weddings are held.
The resort also offers horseback riding for P250/hour and calesa ride for P50/trip.
There also sculptures created by National Artist Napoleon Abueva.
These are bignay berries that the owners make into bignay fruit wine.
If you want to stay for the night, there are cottages that range for P2,400 to P4,200 per night and a dormitory for P350/person per night.
One of their greenhouse domes.
Overall, we have a very enjoyable and educational experience at the place. We were so tired exploring the place but that’s nothing compared to the wonderful sights the place had offered us.
For sure, we will come back again one of these days.
