A Night of Laughter
January 29, 2008“Take a LAUGH break… after a TOUGH job.”
This is Laugh Tough’s slogan. True enough, I was given a break and I need it badly. It was a very busy and exhausting week for me and my officemates at work as we are all occupied at preparing things for an upcoming audit. That laughter therapy was very helpful in relieving the stress at work. It was also a first-time experience for me to go to a comedy bar.
This comedy bar and restaurant is located at The Venue Compound, Davao City. It was recommended to me by my sister Dianne as she herself had already gone to the place four times and she still wants to return. The in-house comedian (I forgot his name but there’s a ‘diva’ in it) recognized Dianne and welcomed us as we entered the place last Saturday. I also brought along my wife Wendy and her sister Karyn.
Our visit to the place is actually the culmination of me and my wife’s afternoon events last Saturday. We set out to Maa at 3 PM to finalize the deal with the owner of the lot we are buying, went to JS Gaisano Ilustre to buy a gift for Wendy’s ‘inaanak’, moved on to nearby People’s Park and be amazed by the sculptures created by Kublai (please see pictures below) and then took off to Iron Horse in Rizal to partake in an eat-all-you-can fiesta.
We arrived at Laugh Tough at around 8:30 PM and since it was still too early, there were a handful of customers and most of them were kids. The comedians (that ‘diva’ gay and one who Wendy said won the Doble Kara contest on a national TV contest) were very successful in making the kids laugh although they are very careful in letting out ‘green jokes’ as the target audience is still wholesome. They even made a kid sang “Happy Birthday to You” in front of the audience although that kid made it sound like “Hape Burdee to Yoo.”
They were at their funniest when the kids are gone and more mature male guys arrived. Their comedy style is this: they ask the audience to write their song requests and they will sing it on-stage with a TV screen displaying the song lyrics ‘ala-videoke’. They will then call the person who requested it to come on-stage to sing it and with them serving as back-up singers. But not before they make fun of you, interviewing you and making “okray-okray” of you. They even came close to touching a guy’s arms and legs and kissing him before allowing him to sing. Sometimes, they will be the one to sing the requested songs and assign their own personal comedic touch to it. If they don’t have the song on their videoke list, they will sing the song with their own impromptu rap version which was so very funny.
Overall, I can say that they were hilarious and amusing. Their green jokes are not that hardcore and offending and they always see to it that they have not hurt a person’s feelings after making “okray” of him/her. They even say, “Joke lang po yun” to the person after a certain not so good remark.
We left a few minutes past midnight and seeing us leave; they sang “Hindi Kita Malilimutan” or some song to that effect! The audience was bursting with laughter at that instance!
Well as for me? I can say that they were succesful in giving me a “LAUGH break…
… after a TOUGH job!”
